2005 Report Card

Most of the Gippsland region is in good environmental shape, providing a good base for economic and social wellbeing. Members of the community, industry sectors and all levels of Government are working together to protect and improve Gippsland’s catchment health.

The 2005 Report Card includes a new asset; the Strzelecki Ranges; an important Gippsland icon and home to a large private forestry industry, national parks and agriculture.

This year most condition ratings have remained the same, reflecting our understanding that improvements in environmental condition will probably take a long time. We do, however, aim to improve the stewardship ratings more quickly, giving us confidence that we have the very best management systems in place.

The stewardship rating has increased for both the Thomson River and the Macalister Irrigation District. There have been extraordinary achievements in the care and management of these assets through strong regional partnerships and Victorian Government policy. In addition to providing local benefits, the good management of these assets is vital for the long term health of the Gippsland Lakes.

Water continues to be on the agenda for Gippsland’s natural resource managers. We are yet to see the full effects of the Victorian Government’s White Paper on Water reform: "Securing Our Water Future Together". Over the next two years, the Gippsland community will be involved in developing sustainable water strategies, exploring what the water reforms mean for us.

Other challenges that natural resource managers will continue to face include climate change impacts, energy and rapid urban development, particularly in coastal areas.

The Gippsland Integrated Natural Resources Forum is committed to providing community, industry and Government regular opportunities to discuss the big picture issues for Gippsland. I welcome feedback on this report card and encourage input into the Forum’s activities.
